National Fire Prevention Week 2022

National Fire Prevention Week 2022

Fire Prevention Week is a week long event to raise awareness of fire and safety, educate the public on how to prevent fires in their homes, businesses and other buildings, and honor those who have lost their lives in fires.

Each year during Fire Prevention Week, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) – the world’s largest volunteer firefighter organization – marks this important observance with events across the country. In addition to its media campaign, NFPA also presents awards for excellence in fire prevention education.

Fire Prevention Week is a time to celebrate the hard work of firefighters and first responders. It’s also a reminder that you can do your part to prevent fires from happening in your home or business by taking important steps.

Here are Some Tips for Staying Safe During Fire Prevention Week:

Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly and installed according to local codes. Smoke alarms are one of the best ways to detect and alert you to a fire in your home before it spreads. If you have more than one alarm, make sure they work together so that one sounds if others are out of service. Install battery backups on all smoke alarms in case they become disconnected from their power source.

Keep fire extinguishers ready near every exit door, including the kitchen and garage. Fire extinguishers provide temporary relief from small fires before firefighters arrive on scene, but they will not put out any fire on their own. Keep them filled with water instead of chemical agents such as carbon dioxide or Halon gas if possible, as these types of extinguishers have been linked with cancerous health effects when inhaled over long periods of time

Fire & Safety Escape Plan For Your Home

If you don’t already have a fire and safety escape plan for your home, take the time to make the plan with your family and those who live in your home. You should practice your home escape plan twice a year.

The first step is to identify where everyone will go if there’s a fire. You might have an attic or basement that you can use for this purpose. If not, then consider using an area of the house that has natural light and is close to an exit.

Once you know where everyone will go, make sure everyone knows how to get there and what they should do if they don’t get there by themselves within minutes. This information should also be printed on a card that can be kept in an easy-to-reach location so that it’s accessible in case of emergency.
